On-Line Bar Code Verification Revisited

In today’s fast-paced manufacturing and distribution environments, barcode accuracy is critical. A poorly printed barcode can lead to shipping errors, inventory discrepancies, rejected products, customer complaints, and unnecessary costs. That’s why more companies are investing in barcode verification and barcode validation technologies to ensure every label leaving the production line is readable and compliant.

In a previous article, we discussed a customer application in which barcode quality had to be verified during production. In that case, PaladinID recommended an aftermarket inline barcode-scanning system that could automatically detect a poor-quality barcode and trigger a product diversion before it reached the customer.

Recently, we were presented with a similar challenge from another customer. Their goal was the same: to ensure that every barcode printed on their products could be successfully scanned by their customers. However, the application was different. The labels were being printed in peel-and-present mode and then manually applied to the product, making the previous inline scanning solution impractical.

As your Label Guide, PaladinID worked closely with industry experts to identify the best solution. After consulting with barcode printing specialist Bruce McDowell at Datamax, we recommended the Datamax H-Class thermal transfer printer equipped with an onboard linear barcode validation scanner.

This high-performance 300 DPI industrial barcode printer features an integrated CCD scanning system that evaluates barcode readability as each label is printed. Users can configure multiple validation parameters, including barcode symbology, the number of barcodes required per label, and the minimum number of successful scans required before the label is approved.

If a barcode fails validation, the system can automatically respond based on user-defined settings. Options include reprinting the label, pausing production, or stopping the printer entirely to prevent defective labels from reaching the next stage of the process.

While this solution is not a true ANSI barcode verifier, it delivers a practical and cost-effective barcode quality control system at approximately half the investment of a full ANSI verification device. For many manufacturing, warehousing, medical device, and logistics applications, this level of barcode validation provides an ideal balance between performance and cost.
